Indian Railways Tops 1 Billion Tonnes of Freight in FY 2025–26 to Date

The ministry attributes efficiency gains to stronger daily throughput alongside cement-logistics reforms.

  • Cumulative freight loading reached 1,020 million tonnes as of November 19 in the current financial year, according to the Railway Ministry.

  • Average daily loading stands near 4.4 million tonnes, up from 4.2 million tonnes last year, indicating improved operational performance.
  • Freight moved from April to October totaled 935.1 million tonnes, up from 906.9 million tonnes a year earlier, reflecting year-on-year growth.
  • Reforms for cement movement, including the Policy for Bulk Cement Terminals and rationalised container rates, aim to boost bulk capacity, cut transit time, lower costs and advance greener, rail-based logistics aligned with Net Zero goals.
