Indian Railways to Raise Passenger Fares From July 1

Marginal per-kilometre fare increases aim to generate around ₹700 crore in added revenue for the remainder of FY2025-26.

Overview

  • From July 1, non-AC Mail/Express fares will increase by 1 paise per km and AC class fares by 2 paise per km.
  • Suburban trains, monthly season tickets and second-class travel up to 500 km are spared from any fare change.
  • Journeys over 500 km in general second class will face a 0.5 paise per km hike.
  • Tatkal bookings will require Aadhaar authentication beginning July 1 and OTP verification from July 15, with agents blocked from the first 30 minutes of sales.
  • This marks the first fare revision since 2020 and is expected to generate roughly ₹700 crore extra toward a projected ₹92,800 crore in FY2025-26 passenger revenue.
