Indian Railways to Adopt 4.5 km ‘Rudrastra’ Freight Trains After Successful Trial

East Central Railway will integrate long-train operations into its logistics network after validating Rudrastra’s coordination during a 200 km trial.

Overview

  • Rudrastra measures 4.5 km, comprises 354 wagons and seven engines coupled from six BOXN rakes.
  • It completed a 200 km trial between Ganjkhwaja station in Uttar Pradesh and Garhwa Road station in Jharkhand in about five hours at an average speed of 40 km/h.
  • The experimental run leveraged the Dedicated Freight Corridor before switching to conventional tracks and validated special technical coordination by the Pandit Deen Dayal Upadhyay Division.
  • By linking six rakes into a single formation, Indian Railways expects to boost freight throughput while saving time, manpower and operational costs.
  • Following the successful experiment, East Central Railway will integrate similar long-train operations into its regular logistics network.
