Indian Railways’ Rationalised Passenger Fares Take Effect Today

The ministry says modest per‑kilometre increases will help offset surging operating costs.

Overview

  • Revised prices apply only to tickets issued on or after December 26, with pre‑booked tickets unaffected and any tickets made by TTEs from today charged at the new rates.
  • There is no change for suburban services or season tickets, and Second Class Ordinary journeys up to 215 km remain unchanged to protect daily commuters.
  • Ordinary class beyond 215 km rises by 1 paisa per km using graded slabs, while Mail/Express non‑AC and all AC classes increase by 2 paise per km.
  • The Railways cites typical impacts such as about Rs 10 more for a 500 km non‑AC Mail/Express trip, and around Rs 30 extra on DelhiMumbai and DelhiHowrah Mail/Express AC and non‑AC tickets, with Rs 15 more in Ordinary class on those routes.
  • The new basic fares also apply to premium services like Rajdhani, Shatabdi and Vande Bharat, with reservation fees, superfast surcharges and GST unchanged, and the move expected to add about Rs 600 crore in revenue this year.
