Indian Railways Raises Long-Distance and AC Fares From December 26

Officials attribute the move to rising manpower, pension, operating costs.

Overview

  • Fares for all AC classes and non-AC Mail/Express services will rise by 2 paise per kilometre, with ordinary class journeys beyond 215 km up by 1 paisa per kilometre.
  • Suburban services and ordinary-class trips up to 215 km face no change, and reservation fees as well as GST remain the same.
  • The Railways expects the rationalisation to add about Rs 600 crore in revenue this year, according to an official statement.
  • Authorities cite 2024–25 cost pressures, including manpower at roughly Rs 1.15 lakh crore, pensions near Rs 60,000 crore, and total operating costs around Rs 2.63 lakh crore.
  • Illustrative increases include about Rs 10 more for a 500 km non-AC journey and roughly Rs 15–30 extra on DelhiHowrah and DelhiMumbai routes.
