Indian Railways Plans 100 Special Trains Ahead of 2028 Simhastha Kumbh Mela

Overview

  • Railway Board chairman Satish Kumar estimates about one crore devotees will travel by train for the 2028 Simhastha Kumbh Mela in Ujjain
  • The Railways will operate 100 special trains in addition to regular services to handle the expected influx
  • Twenty-two new lines are being laid at Ujjain and nearby stations, including nine lines within Ujjain for additional train parking
  • Small stations such as Laxmibai Nagar and Mhow are being upgraded for pilgrim services while Indore station is set for a ₹485 crore phased redevelopment
  • Under the Indore-Dahod project, 132 km of new track will be laid this financial year toward a 205 km line, with 32 km already completed
