Indian Railways Launches Programme to Double Train Capacity in 48 Cities by 2030

Early works across Odisha, Tamil Nadu, Kerala mark a phased rollout with benefits expected before 2030.

Overview

  • The Railway Minister announced plans to double capacity in Chennai, Coimbatore and Ernakulam by decade-end, including Chennai Egmore’s major redevelopment, a new Perambur terminal and Podanur’s upgrade as Coimbatore’s second terminal.
  • East Coast Railway set a five-year goal to double originating capacity in Bhubaneswar, Puri and Visakhapatnam as part of the national 48-city push.
  • At Puri, two full-length integrated pit lines are under construction, with the coaching maintenance unit slated to shift to a second depot on the sanctioned PuriKonark line.
  • Bhubaneswar New Station is being developed as a satellite terminal with two pit lines at Mancheswar, and additional depots are planned outside the city due to space constraints.
  • For Visakhapatnam, a Railway Board–reviewed DPR proposes extra lines, platforms, stabling and electronic interlocking, while Jaganadhpuram is planned as a mega coaching maintenance depot.
