Indian Railways Implements 1–2 Paise-Per-Km Fare Hike From Today

The move responds to surging operating costs, with a projected revenue gain of about ₹600 crore.

Overview

  • Revised fares apply only to tickets issued on or after December 26, with pre-booked tickets remaining at earlier rates.
  • Ordinary Second Class beyond 215 km rises by 1 paise per km, with distance slabs adding ₹5, ₹10, ₹15 or ₹20 for longer journeys.
  • In Mail/Express and all AC classes, fares increase by 2 paise per km, adding about ₹10 on a 500 km non-AC trip.
  • Suburban services and season tickets see no change, and reservation fees, superfast surcharges, GST and rounding rules remain unchanged.
  • Zonal railways are updating PRS/UTS systems and station fare lists as the ministry rolls out the calibrated structure across services including Rajdhani, Shatabdi, Duronto and Vande Bharat.
