Indian Railways Enters Final Commissioning Phase for First Hydrogen-Powered Train

RDSO-led validation followed by a TÜV SÜD safety audit will enable Jind refuelling infrastructure ahead of JindSonipat service

Overview

  • The Ministry of Railways reported a successful test of the hydrogen-powered driving power car at ICF Chennai, marking the start of final commissioning
  • The pilot retrofits a 10-coach DEMU with hydrogen fuel cells and a 1,200 HP power car capable of carrying over 2,600 passengers
  • The Rs 136 crore project, led by RDSO, converts diesel power cars into fuel-cell traction units and validates all critical components
  • A Jind facility featuring a 1 MW PEM electrolyser (≈430 kg/day) and up to 3,000 kg of hydrogen storage will supply and refuel the train
  • Safety measures include CFD leak simulations, pressure relief valves, leak detectors, flame sensors and an independent TÜV SÜD audit
