Indian Railways Dispatches First Ajni Locomotive Fitted With Kavach Safety System

The move launches Ajni’s retrofit of 312 three-phase engines under a nationwide program targeting about 10,000 locomotives.

Overview

  • The Electric Loco Shed at Ajni in Nagpur division sent out WAG-9 locomotive No. 31104 as its first unit equipped with the Kavach Automatic Train Protection system.
  • The Kavach installation on the Ajni locomotive was supplied by Karnex Microsystems India Limited based in Hyderabad.
  • Kavach is an indigenous, SIL-4 certified Train Collision Avoidance System that can automatically apply brakes to prevent collisions, overspeeding, and red-signal violations.
  • Indian Railways conducted yard tests at Ajni that validated auto-braking, in-cab signal display, SOS alerts, and automatic whistling at level crossings.
  • Indian Railways plans to equip about 10,000 locomotives with Kavach under the Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative.
