Indian Railways Deploys 84 Special Trains After IndiGo Disruptions, Curbs Platform Access in Mumbai

Railway officials say the response is driven by festival crowds in Mumbai alongside widespread IndiGo cancellations that displaced travelers.

Overview

  • The Railway Board announced 84 special trains making 104 trips on December 6 and said more could be added based on demand and traffic conditions.
  • Railway divisions are publicising schedules at airports to assist stranded flyers, with Western Railway running seven specials linking Mumbai to New Delhi, Bhiwani, Shakur Basti and other destinations, and East Coast Railway issuing Train-on-Demand services and coach augmentations.
  • Southern Railway is operating SecunderabadChennai Egmore specials on December 6–7 and adding AC three-tier coaches to multiple long-distance services, with additional NagercoilTambaram trips scheduled.
  • Central Railway has rolled out 14 Train-on-Demand specials over December 6–7 connecting Mumbai, Pune and other hubs to Nagpur, Madgaon, Hyderabad, Hazrat Nizamuddin, Lucknow and Gorakhpur.
  • To manage Mahaparinirvan Diwas crowds, platform ticket sales are restricted December 5–7 at 13 stations including CSMT and Dadar with exemptions for vulnerable passengers, the Mumbai suburban weekly mega block is cancelled for December 7, and 12 overnight suburban specials ran for devotees.
