Overview
- The Research Designs & Standards Organisation approved Kavach 4.0 in May 2025 for speeds up to 160 km/h under Safety Integrity Level 4, employing RFID tags, optical fibre and integrated braking to prevent collisions.
- Indian Railways has laid 5,856 km of optical fibre, erected 619 telecom towers, installed Kavach at 708 stations and equipped 1,107 locomotives, covering 4,001 route km of the Delhi–Mumbai corridor.
- Kavach’s digital dashboard delivers real-time location and speed data directly to loco pilots, eliminating the need to visually spot signals in fog or low-visibility conditions.
- Over 30,000 railway personnel have been trained in Kavach operations and maintenance, and IRISET has signed memoranda of understanding with 17 AICTE-approved institutions to include the system in BTech curricula.
- The Ministry of Railways plans a phased expansion of Kavach 4.0 to other high-density routes nationwide over the next six years under its Atmanirbhar Bhar at safety modernization drive.
