Overview
- Indian Railways has cleared the train for operation and reports and visuals say it completed a final high-speed trial at 120 km/h ahead of passenger pilots.
- The train is a 10-coach set with two Driving Power Cars, each rated at 1,200 kW for a combined 2,400 kW of traction power and a commercial top speed of about 75 km/h.
- On a single refuel the train can travel roughly 250 km and its onboard equipment includes hydrogen storage cylinders, fuel cells, batteries and continuous monitoring systems.
- A dedicated hydrogen production, compression, storage and refuelling facility was built at Jind and granted licences by PESO, with leak detectors and flame sensors installed across train and site.
- The Research Designs and Standards Organisation designed the train and the Integral Coach Factory built it under the Atmanirbhar Bharat programme, and the pilot will test whether hydrogen can fill gaps on routes where overhead electrification is impractical.
