Indian Railways Announces Nine Amrit Bharat Express Routes From Bengal and Assam
Services are slated to begin within a week to expand low-cost non-AC sleeper travel from the east.
Overview
- The expansion links West Bengal and Assam to major destinations across northern, southern and western India, according to Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw.
- The nine routes are Guwahati (Kamakhya)–Rohtak, Dibrugarh–Lucknow (Gomti Nagar), New Jalpaiguri–Nagercoil, New Jalpaiguri–Tiruchirappalli, Alipurduar–SMVT Bengaluru, Alipurduar–Mumbai (Panvel), Kolkata (Santragachi)–Tambaram, Kolkata (Howrah)–Anand Vihar Terminal, and Kolkata (Sealdah)–Banaras.
- The Ministry of Railways said the new services will be introduced within a week.
- The trains provide non-AC long-distance sleeper travel at roughly Rs 500 per 1,000 kilometres with features including improved berths, modern toilets with electro-pneumatic flushing, fast charging points, pantry cars and accessibility provisions.
- The trainsets are produced by ICF Chennai at about Rs 65 crore per 22-coach set, and 30 Amrit Bharat Express trains have been operational since December 2023.
