Indian Railways’ 48-City Capacity Drive Moves Ahead as Zones Lay Out Time-Bound Upgrades

Zonal railways have started submitting detailed plans to deliver progressive capacity gains through 2030.

Overview

  • Railway Board chairman Satish Kumar instructed all zones to file city-wise plans with specific timelines and defined outcomes covering terminals, maintenance facilities and sectional capacity.
  • Western Railway projected around 65 additional long-distance trains and about 165 more suburban services in Mumbai after key multitracking and segregation works, with the Mumbai CentralBorivali 6th line slated to finish by January 2026.
  • Central Railway said Mumbai could support 584 extra suburban services and accommodate 30 additional primary-maintained and 38 platform-returned Mail/Express trains through platform extensions, yard remodelling and new coaching terminals.
  • New Delhi station will be redeveloped with two new buildings totaling roughly 109,000 sq m to handle up to seven lakh passengers daily, with integrated access and expanded holding areas under the Amrit Bharat scheme.
  • Regional plans are surfacing nationwide, with East Coast Railway advancing pit lines and a coaching complex for Puri and yard expansion in Visakhapatnam, while Northeast Frontier Railway pursues third-line and new bridge projects to ease congestion in Guwahati.
