A set of pictures released by the Indian government showed Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla, who scripted history by becoming the first Indian on the International Space Station, observing the Earth from the space station.

Overview

  • He has executed seven India-sponsored and 60 multinational microgravity studies, including myogenesis, Space Micro Algae and the Sprouts plant-growth experiment.
  • On July 6, he dialled ISRO Chairman Dr. V. Narayanan and senior officials to review his health, mission milestones and the documentation needed for India’s human spaceflight plans.
  • On July 8, he spoke with Indian students via ham radio from the Cupola Module, encouraging them to pursue careers in space and offering to guide future astronauts.
  • From the ISS’s seven-windowed Cupola, he shared panoramic images of a borderless Earth, reflected on the privilege of the view and fostered cultural diplomacy by offering traditional Indian dishes to his crewmates.
  • With his 14-day Axiom-4 flight on schedule, Shukla is set to return on July 10, delivering insights that will directly inform India’s Gaganyaan objectives.
