Indian-Origin Catholic Priest Fatally Shot in Kansas, Suspect in Custody

Fr. Arul Carasala, a Catholic priest originally from India, was shot and killed on April 3, 2025, at the rectory of Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Seneca, Kansas.
The suspect, identified as 66-year-old Gary L. Hermesch from Tulsa, Oklahoma, has been arrested and jailed on suspicion of first-degree murder.
Authorities have confirmed there is no ongoing threat to the community, though the motive for the shooting remains unknown.
Fr. Carasala, ordained in 1994, had served in Kansas since 2004 and was known for his dedication and leadership in the Archdiocese of Kansas City.
