Overview

  • INS Udaygiri, the second of seven Nilgiri-class frigates under the ₹45,000-crore Project 17A, was delivered to the Indian Navy on July 1 and will be commissioned by August.
  • INS Mahendragiri, the fourth vessel built at Mazagon Dock in Mumbai, is scheduled for delivery in February 2026 with commissioning to follow one to two months later.
  • Taragiri is set for delivery after trials in October 2025, and the remaining frigates Himgiri, Dunagiri and Vindhyagiri are expected to join the fleet between late 2025 and August 2026.
  • The program aims to sharpen India’s blue-water capabilities and deter extra-regional naval influence in the Indian Ocean region.
  • Each 149-metre stealth frigate displaces 6,670 tonnes, integrates 75 percent local systems with imported GE turbines and Israeli radars, and carries BrahMos and Barak missiles along with anti-submarine and air-defence suites.
