Indian Navy to Commission Two Stealth Frigates Together on August 26

Scheduled at Visakhapatnam, the ceremony unites INS Udaygiri—built in Mumbai—alongside INS Himgiri—built in Kolkata—to underscore India’s self-reliant warship production under Project 17A.

Overview

  • INS Udaygiri (F35) and INS Himgiri (F34) will be simultaneously commissioned on August 26 after completing sea trials, marking the first dual induction of major combatants from separate Indian shipyards.
  • Both frigates belong to the Project 17A Nilgiri class, which features approximately 75% indigenous systems, advanced stealth shaping and multi-mission blue-water capabilities.
  • Udaygiri represents the 100th design by the Navy’s Warship Design Bureau and was built by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited in Mumbai, while Himgiri is the first P17A vessel from Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers in Kolkata.
  • Each frigate displaces about 6,700 tonnes—roughly 5% larger than the Shivalik class—and uses a combined diesel or gas (CODOG) propulsion plant managed through an Integrated Platform Management System.
  • The commissioning highlights the Make in India and Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiatives by engaging over 200 MSMEs and supporting around 4,000 direct and 10,000 indirect jobs in the defence sector.
