Indian Navy to Commission INS Ikshak in Kochi on Nov. 6

The third SVL-class ship expands India's hydrographic capacity through indigenous design, advanced survey systems, HADR readiness, gender-inclusive berthing.

Overview

  • Chief of the Naval Staff Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi will preside over the commissioning ceremony at Naval Base Kochi on November 6.
  • INS Ikshak is the third Survey Vessel (Large) in its class and the first SVL to be based with the Southern Naval Command.
  • Built by GRSE in Kolkata with over 80% indigenous content, the project reflects collaboration with Indian MSMEs under Aatmanirbhar Bharat.
  • The vessel is equipped for coastal and deep-water surveys with a high-resolution multi-beam echo sounder, an AUV, an ROV, four Survey Motor Boats, and a helicopter deck.
  • Designed for dual roles, the ship can support Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief operations and convert to a hospital ship during emergencies, with dedicated accommodation for women.
