Indian Navy to Commission First Mahe-Class Anti-Submarine Craft in Mumbai on Nov. 24

The indigenous vessel strengthens shallow-water defenses under India’s Make in India program.

Overview

  • The commissioning at Naval Dockyard, Mumbai will be hosted by Vice Admiral Krishna Swaminathan and presided over by Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi.
  • Built by Cochin Shipyard Limited in Kochi, Mahe features over 80% indigenous content reflecting the Atmanirbhar Bharat push in naval shipbuilding.
  • Once in service, Mahe will patrol the Western Seaboard as a “Silent Hunter” focused on persistent detection and tracking of submarines in coastal waters.
  • The ASW-SWC design measures 78 meters and roughly 900 tonnes, reaches 25 knots with about 1,800 nautical miles endurance, and carries indigenous underwater sensors for ASW, low-intensity tasks, and mine-laying.
  • Mahe is the first of a 16-ship program contracted in April 2019—eight to CSL and eight to GRSE—with coverage noting growing regional submarine activity including Pakistan’s AIP-equipped Hangor-class expected to begin commissioning in 2026.
