Indian Navy to Commission First Indigenous ASW Shallow Water Craft INS Arnala on June 18

Overview

  • The commissioning ceremony is set for June 18 at the Naval Dockyard in Visakhapatnam, presided over by Chief of Defence Staff General Anil Chauhan and hosted by Vice Admiral Rajesh Pendharkar.
  • INS Arnala was delivered on May 8 after construction by Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers in collaboration with L&T Shipbuilders under a public-private partnership.
  • The warship integrates advanced systems from Bharat Electronics Limited, L&T, Mahindra Defence and MEIL, with more than 80% of its components sourced domestically.
  • Designed to replace ageing Abhay-class corvettes, Arnala will conduct anti-submarine operations, low-intensity maritime missions and mine-laying in coastal waters.
  • Measuring 77.6 meters and displacing 1,490 tonnes, it is the largest diesel-engine waterjet-propelled vessel in the Indian Navy and involves over 55 MSMEs in its supply chain.
