Overview

  • INS Udaygiri (F35) and INS Himgiri (F34) were commissioned on August 26 at Visakhapatnam, marking the first simultaneous induction of frontline combatants built at different shipyards into the Eastern Fleet.
  • Udaygiri was built by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders in Mumbai and Himgiri by Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers in Kolkata, with deliveries on July 1 and July 31, 2025 following trials.
  • Each P17A frigate displaces about 6,700 tonnes with a stealth-optimized design and CODOG propulsion, carrying BrahMos anti-ship missiles, MRSAM air-defense missiles, a 76 mm gun, AK-630 CIWS, torpedo and rocket launchers.
  • Primary sensors include the IAI MF-STAR AESA radar and Indra Sistemas LANZA-N 3D radar, with approximately 75% indigenous content supplied by firms such as BEL, Tata and L&T through modular construction methods that shortened build time; Udaygiri achieved the class’s quickest post-launch delivery.
  • Four remaining Nilgiri-class frigates are scheduled for delivery by mid-2026, and the Navy is preparing a follow-on Project 17B with a request for proposal expected by end-2025 at an estimated ₹70,000 crore as reported.
