Overview

  • Commissioned at Visakhapatnam, the pair marks the Navy’s first same‑day induction of frontline combatants built at different yards, with Udaygiri from MDL and Himgiri from GRSE.
  • The 6,700‑tonne P17A frigates feature CODOG propulsion, integrated platform management, and advanced sensors and weapons including supersonic BrahMos, medium‑range SAMs, a 76 mm gun, CIWS and anti‑submarine systems.
  • Roughly 75% indigenous content and contributions from more than 200 MSMEs reflect the programme’s Make in India focus, supporting thousands of direct and indirect jobs.
  • Both ships join the Eastern Fleet to enhance sea‑control and protection of India’s maritime interests across the Indian Ocean Region.
  • Udaygiri is the 100th design from the Navy’s Warship Design Bureau and the fastest of her class to be delivered post‑launch, highlighting gains from modular construction.
