Overview

  • Defence Minister Rajnath Singh presided over the commissioning of the two Project 17A Nilgiri-class frigates at the Eastern Naval Command on August 26.
  • It is the first time two frontline combatants built at different Indian yards were inducted together, with Udaygiri from MDL and Himgiri from GRSE.
  • Designed by the Navy’s Warship Design Bureau, Udaygiri is the bureau’s 100th ship, marking a milestone in indigenous warship design.
  • Each roughly 6,700‑ton frigate uses CODOG propulsion with an Integrated Platform Management System and carries supersonic surface‑to‑surface missiles, medium‑range SAMs, a 76 mm gun, close‑in weapon systems, and anti‑submarine warfare suites.
  • Both ships join the Eastern Fleet to bolster presence across the Indian Ocean Region, featuring about 75% indigenous content sourced from hundreds of MSMEs, with Udaygiri delivered fastest in class via modular construction.
