Overview
- The Indian Navy formally commissioned INS Mangrol on Monday, October 12, 2026, at the Naval Dockyard in Mumbai under the ceremony presided over by Vice‑Admiral Sanjay Vatsayan.
- Built by Cochin Shipyard Limited, Mangrol was delivered in late August and incorporates more than 80 percent indigenous content under the Make in India and Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiatives.
- The roughly 900‑tonne Mahe‑class ship is powered by three diesel engines with waterjet propulsion for high manoeuvrability and is fitted with an Abhay hull‑mounted sonar, lightweight torpedoes, an indigenous anti‑submarine rocket launcher, and the Maareech torpedo‑decoy system.
- Designed for the littoral environment where detection is harder, Mangrol will conduct anti‑submarine warfare, underwater surveillance, limited mine‑warfare tasks and low‑intensity maritime operations while operating with maritime patrol aircraft and helicopters.
- Mangrol is the third of eight Mahe‑class vessels being built by CSL as part of a 16‑ship shallow‑water ASW programme shared with GRSE, a push that officials say will expand coastal protection, raise fleet numbers through mid‑2028, and sustain domestic defence suppliers.
