Indian Navy Commissions INS Androth, Second ASW Shallow Water Craft, in Visakhapatnam

The GRSE-built vessel advances India’s self-reliant shipbuilding drive with over 80% local content.

Overview

  • Commissioned on October 6 at the Naval Dockyard in Visakhapatnam in a ceremony led by Vice Admiral Rajesh Pendharkar, Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Eastern Naval Command.
  • Designed for anti-submarine warfare in coastal and shallow waters, the ship is fitted with modern sonar, lightweight torpedoes and indigenous ASW rockets for littoral threat response.
  • The vessel measures about 77 metres, displaces roughly 1,500 tonnes and is powered by three diesel-driven waterjets for high agility and manoeuvrability.
  • Built by Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers and handed over on September 13, Androth is the second in the series after INS Arnala and forms part of a 16-ship programme replacing Abhay-class corvettes.
  • Steel Authority of India said it supplied the full requirement of special-grade HR sheets and plates for Androth and other GRSE-built ASW-SWCs, highlighting a deepening indigenous supply chain.
