Indian Navy Commissions First Indigenous Diving Support Vessel INS Nistar

Commissioned in Visakhapatnam, it bolsters deep-sea rescue readiness for the Eastern Naval Command.

Overview

  • INS Nistar was formally commissioned on July 18 at Visakhapatnam by Minister of State for Defence Sanjay Seth in the presence of Navy Chief Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi.
  • Built by Hindustan Shipyard Limited with over 80% indigenous content from 120 MSMEs, the vessel complies with Indian Register of Shipping standards.
  • The 118-metre ship displaces more than 10,500 tonnes and features an advanced diving complex, remotely operated vehicles and a mothership role for a Deep Submergence Rescue Vehicle.
  • Assigned to the Eastern Naval Command, Nistar enhances the Navy’s capacity for saturation diving and distressed submarine rescue operations.
  • Its induction revives the legacy of the original INS Nistar and underscores India’s Aatmanirbharta push in defence manufacturing.
