  • INS Tamal was formally commissioned on July 1 at Russia’s Yantar Shipyard under Vice Admiral Sanjay Jasjit Singh, becoming the last major warship built abroad for the Indian Navy.
  • The 125 m, 3,900 tonne stealth frigate is the second of the upgraded Tushil class under the 2016 ₹21,000 crore Project 11356.6 contract with Russia.
  • It integrates advanced network-centric combat management and electronic warfare suites alongside 33 made-in-India systems, accounting for over 26 percent indigenous content.
  • Tamal’s armament includes dual-role BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles, Shtil vertical-launch surface-to-air missiles, a 100 mm naval gun, CIWS, anti-submarine rockets, heavyweight torpedoes and deck facilities for Kamov-28 and Kamov-31 helicopters.
  • After completing formal delivery trials, the frigate will sail to its homeport at Karwar under the Western Fleet while two follow-on Triput-class ships enter domestic assembly at Goa Shipyard Limited.
