Indian Delivery and Quick Commerce Apps Add Surcharges as Platform Fees Reach Rs 15

Heavy losses have led India’s top platforms to abandon growth subsidies in favour of boosting sustainable margins

Overview

  • Platform and handling fees on Indian delivery and quick commerce apps have climbed to between Rs 9 and Rs 15 per order, accounting for roughly 1–3% of typical basket values.
  • Quick commerce platforms including Zepto, Blinkit and Swiggy Instamart have introduced surcharges for small orders, large orders, weather conditions and peak times, ranging from Rs 6 to Rs 30 per order.
  • Blinkit posted a loss of Rs 178 crore while Swiggy Instamart incurred an Rs 840 crore deficit in the January–March 2025 quarter.
  • Zomato and Swiggy first introduced platform fees in 2023 and have incrementally raised them to Rs 10 and Rs 11.80 per order respectively by October 2024.
  • Analysts at Axis Capital signal that room remains for further platform fee increases, which could push per-order charges even higher.
