Indian Coast Guard Seizes Three Bangladeshi Boats, Detains 79 for Illegal Fishing in Bay of Bengal

Patrols near the maritime boundary detected the vessels inside India’s EEZ, with crews now facing proceedings under the Maritime Zones of India Act.

Overview

  • ICG ships Amrit Kaur and Kamla Devi intercepted the boats during IMBL surveillance on November 15–16 and found them operating about two nautical miles inside Indian waters.
  • Boarding teams reported the crews lacked permits and that fishing gear and catch on board confirmed active operations within India’s maritime zones.
  • The 79 detained individuals, including three minors, were escorted to Frazerganj in West Bengal and handed to the marine police for legal action.
  • In separate actions reported November 16–17, the Coast Guard detained 29 fishermen from one trawler and 26 from another, with the accused to be produced in Kakdwip court.
  • Authorities cite strengthened coastal security and, according to union representatives, strained India–Bangladesh ties that have slowed reciprocal returns of detained fishermen.
