Indian Coast Guard Mobilizes 26,092 Volunteers for International Coastal Cleanup Across India

The nationwide drives paired debris removal with public outreach under UNEP-SACEP plus Swachh Bharat campaigns.

Overview

  • In its role as national coordinator since 2006, the Indian Coast Guard led synchronized cleanups across all coastal states and union territories on September 20.
  • In Mumbai, efforts at Girgaon Chowpatty and Juhu collected about 3,000 kg of waste with roughly 1,000 participants, and disposal support came from the BMC.
  • At Visakhapatnam’s RK Beach, teams removed approximately 600 kg of recyclable plastic and about 700 kg of other dry waste with volunteers from CISF, NCC, and industry groups.
  • An ICG-led drive at Chennai’s Marina Beach drew community participation and featured national volleyball player Jerome Vinith.
  • INCOIS organized a cleanup at Kerala’s Ponnani Beach, removing around 100 kg of plastic and running awareness activities with local partners.
