Indian Coast Guard Launches Indigenous Fast Patrol Vessel 'Atal'

The 52-meter vessel strengthens coastal security under India’s self-reliant defence manufacturing push.

Overview

  • Goa Shipyard Limited launched the Fast Patrol Vessel 'Atal' at Vasco da Gama on July 29 for the Indian Coast Guard.
  • The vessel measures 52 metres in length, has an 8-metre beam and displaces 320 tonnes under the Ministry of Defence’s Buy (Indian-IDDM) category.
  • Atal is equipped to perform coastal patrols, island security missions, offshore asset protection, anti-smuggling and anti-piracy operations, and search-and-rescue missions.
  • This ship is the sixth in an eight-ship series of indigenously designed FPVs by GSL, with two vessels remaining to be completed.
  • The launch follows the July 22 keel-laying at Mazagon Dock of the first next-generation offshore patrol vessel, highlighting ongoing fleet modernization.
