Indian Coast Guard Completes Rescue and Towing of Disabled US Yacht near Nicobar Islands

Coast Guard Ship Rajveer departed on July 10 to tow the disabled yacht from southeast of Indira Point to Campbell Bay harbour by 8 AM the following day.

Overview

  • On July 10 at 11:57 AM MRCC Port Blair received a distress alert from the US Consulate in Chennai for Sea Angel, whose sail failed and propeller was fouled 52 nautical miles southeast of Indira Point.
  • ICG Ship Rajveer was dispatched at 2 PM, reached the yacht by 5:30 PM, and established towing lines by 6:50 PM despite rough sea conditions.
  • The yacht arrived at Campbell Bay harbour at 8 AM on July 11, and both crew members, one American and one Turkish national, were confirmed safe and in good health.
  • The operation activated International Safety Net protocols to alert merchant vessels and coordinate multinational assistance in the Bay of Bengal.
  • The Coast Guard is also probing last month’s rescue of three Sri Lankan nationals abandoned on a sandbar near Adam’s Bridge.
