Overview
- The Indian Army has begun house-to-house visits to the homes of the 545 next of kin of soldiers who died in the 1999 Kargil conflict.
- The two-month commemoration will feature operational events and local battle re-enactments culminating in a wreath-laying at the Kargil War Memorial in Dras on July 26.
- Outreach teams are travelling to 25 states, two union territories and Nepal to honor families and assess any welfare or grievance issues.
- Each visit includes a personalised letter of gratitude, a commemorative memento and a dossier of benefits authorised by central and state governments.
- Personal memorabilia collected from families will be preserved for display at the Dras memorial as a lasting tribute to the martyrs.
