Indian Army Formalizes AI Roadmap and Establishes DGIS Task Force and AI Lab

AI features will be mandated in all new equipment specifications to ensure force-wide adoption

Overview

  • The roadmap, expedited after May’s Operation Sindoor cross-border mission, outlines deployment of AI, ML and Big Data tools across tactical, operational and strategic levels by 2026–27.
  • A new task force under the Directorate General of Information Systems will oversee technology integration, training, data sharing and maintenance across the Army.
  • An AI laboratory at DGIS will develop and test models for battlefield analytics and coordinate integration with Navy and Air Force applications.
  • Revised General Staff Qualitative Requirements now embed AI capabilities in all future procurements and mandate retrofitting of select legacy platforms.
  • Planned AI tools include LLM-based text summarizers, chatbots, voice-to-text conversion, facial recognition, threat-detection algorithms and real-time fusion of drone, satellite, aircraft and ground-sensor data.
