Indian Army Begins Fast-Track Induction of Indigenous ‘Saksham’ Counter-Drone Grid to Secure Low-Altitude Airspace

The AI-enabled platform fuses sensors with effectors on the Army Data Network to give commanders a real-time drone picture over the Air Littoral.

Overview

  • Procurement is approved under the Fast Track Procurement route with deployment to all field formations targeted within about one year.
  • Developed with Bharat Electronics Limited, the modular command-and-control system integrates counter-UAS sensors, soft- and hard-kill options, automated decision support, and 3D visualisation.
  • Saksham operates on the secure Army Data Network to generate a Recognised UAS Picture and draws inputs from Akashteer to map friendly, neutral, and hostile airspace users.
  • The Army has broadened its operational concept from the Tactical Battle Area to the Tactical Battlefield Space, extending ground control to the Air Littoral up to 3,000 metres.
  • Officials point to lessons from Operation Sindoor as the driver for the effort, with one report claiming nearly 400 hostile drones were neutralised, a figure not widely corroborated across outlets.
