Overview

  • Washington has so far refused to meet India’s demand for a rollback of the planned 26% reciprocal tariff set for July 9, contributing to the impasse.
  • The U.S. side is pressing for Indian tariff cuts on corn, soybeans and other farm goods and for expanded access to dairy, ethanol, automobiles and medical devices.
  • India has offered tariff reductions on almonds, pistachios and walnuts and signaled willingness to grant preferential treatment to U.S. imports in energy, automotive and defence sectors.
  • India’s exports to the U.S. rose to $17.25 billion in April-May, up from $14.17 billion a year earlier, suggesting limited impact from earlier U.S. tariff hikes.
  • While Modi and Trump aim to finalize the first phase of a bilateral trade agreement by autumn 2025 and boost trade to $500 billion by 2030, New Delhi is also pursuing free trade talks with the EU and UK to diversify its partnerships.
