Overview
- The Ministry of Minority Affairs launched the Unified Waqf Management, Empowerment, Efficiency and Development (UMEED) portal on June 6 to centralize real-time registration of over 900,000 waqf properties.
- Under the Waqf (Amendment) Act, 2025, every property entry must pass through a Maker (mutawalli), Checker (waqf board official) and Approver (government authority) before final verification.
- Key functionalities include GIS-mapped geo-tagging, an online grievance redressal mechanism and public access to authenticated waqf records.
- The All India Muslim Personal Law Board has labeled the portal’s launch illegal and plans to petition the Supreme Court to halt mandatory registrations.
- Government leaders assert the portal aligns with constitutional provisions and will help channel waqf assets into education, healthcare and livelihood initiatives for underprivileged Muslims.
