India Unveils Rs 6.42 Lakh Crore Grid Plan to Evacuate Brahmaputra Hydropower by 2047

The CEA's blueprint channels Brahmaputra hydro to meet rising power demand through a phased transmission buildout.

Overview

  • The plan targets evacuation of roughly 65 GW from 12 Brahmaputra sub-basins, alongside 11.1 GW of pumped-storage potential identified by the CEA.
  • Implementation requires about 31,000 circuit-km of new lines, 68 GVA of transformation capacity and 42 GW of HVDC, phased to 2035 and beyond.
  • Funding is estimated at Rs 6.42 lakh crore, with Rs 1.91 lakh crore slated through 2035 and Rs 4.52 lakh crore thereafter.
  • Projects are to be taken up largely by NHPC, NEEPCO and SJVN, with several schemes already in the pipeline and a portion of basin capacity existing or under construction.
  • The blueprint follows Chinese dam building on the upper Brahmaputra and faces domestic hurdles such as clearances, financing and local opposition to projects like Upper Siang.
