India Unveils Rs 30,000 Crore Forensics Overhaul to Deliver Three‑Year FIR‑to‑SC Justice by 2029

Direct lab-to-court reporting, with mandatory forensic visits, forms the procedural spine of the plan.

Overview

  • Funding will support a pan‑India buildout that includes new Central Forensic Science Laboratories, upgrades to state FSLs, forensic vans and standardized protocols.
  • Eight new CFSLs are being established in addition to the existing seven, with the government saying every state or union territory will have either an NFSU campus or a CFSL.
  • An e‑Forensics IT platform has been launched with 143 laboratories connected to enable electronic records, interoperability and future AI‑based analysis.
  • Under new legal provisions, forensic laboratories will submit reports directly to courts with copies to police, and forensic examinations are mandatory in cases punishable by seven years or more.
  • NFSU is expanding capacity with 14 campuses, over 100 training programs and a target of 35,000 students by 2029, alongside 46 patents, 103 MoUs with 96 countries and 117 agreements with domestic bodies.
