Overview
- The initiative targets domestic production of critical inputs for medicines, biofuels and biofertilisers that India largely imports.
- About 1,000 products have been identified for indigenous manufacture, with the list to be published online, according to officials.
- Planned hubs will provide shared infrastructure, including 500–1,000 litre fermenters, to lower scale-up costs for start-ups and small firms, an official said.
- Access will extend to public and private labs, universities, start-ups and companies, with fees capped at up to 5% over cost for start-ups and up to 15% for companies, and no facility claim on IP.
- Six DBT-supported biofoundries at NABI Mohali, Tata Memorial Centre, ICGEB New Delhi, THSTI Faridabad, IPFT Gurugram and NCCS Pune will feed proofs of concept into the hubs, including work on monoclonal antibodies, carbon capture and smart proteins.
