India unveils BharatGen, its first indigenous multimodal AI model for 22 languages

Overview

  • Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh inaugurated BharatGen at the BharatGen Summit in New Delhi on June 2, marking the debut of India’s first homegrown government-funded multimodal large language model.
  • Built under the National Mission on Interdisciplinary Cyber-Physical Systems and implemented through the TIH Foundation for IoT and IoE at IIT Bombay, BharatGen is backed by the Department of Science and Technology.
  • The platform integrates text, speech and image processing to provide seamless AI services in 22 Indian languages.
  • Designed as a national mission to deliver ethical, inclusive artificial intelligence, it aims to empower sectors such as healthcare, education, agriculture and governance with tailored solutions.
  • Alongside the launch, the Generative AI Hackathon 2025 will challenge student innovators to create practical AI applications for diverse regional needs.
