India Tops Ukraine’s July Diesel Imports After U.S. Imposes 50% Tariffs Over Russian Oil

Analysts say the surge exposes the limits of unilateral sanctions in a tightly linked fuel market.

Overview

  • NaftoRynok reports India supplied 15.5% of Ukraine’s diesel in July, the largest share by country.
  • Average daily deliveries from India were about 2,700 tons, and its January–July share rose to 10.2% from 1.9% in the same period of 2024.
  • Indian-origin fuel reaches Ukraine via tanker runs along the Danube from Romania and through Turkey’s OPET terminal, which continues to operate despite partial curbs.
  • Other key July suppliers were Slovakia at 15%, Greece at 13.5%, Turkey at 12.4%, and Lithuania at 11.4%, indicating a diversified import mix.
  • The shift comes as Washington levies a 50% tariff on Indian goods over Russian oil purchases, and some exported diesel may include refined Russian-origin crude.
