India Tops 1 Billion Broadband Subscribers, Government Data Show

Officials credit rapid 5G deployment, NBM 2.0 outreach, rising usage, faster networks, alongside a drive for 6G IPR.

Overview

  • The Ministry of Communications and TRAI report the broadband subscriber base reached 100.37 crore in November 2025.
  • The total has risen more than sixfold in a decade, up from 131.49 million in November 2015.
  • TRAI’s Q2 FY26 data showed broadband at 995.63 million and total internet users at 1,017.81 million, setting up the November crossover.
  • DoT says average monthly data per wireless user climbed to 24 GB and median mobile broadband speeds exceeded 130 Mbps by October 2025.
  • Policy drivers include the January launch of NBM 2.0 to extend high-speed access to villages and anchor institutions, plus a Bharat 6G Alliance push with a goal of at least 10% of India’s 6G IPR.
