Overview

  • Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal told Srinagar traders on July 6 that the government will formally review demands to raise the minimum import price and duties on apples.
  • Under existing safeguards, apples enter at a minimum price of Rs 50 per kilogram and attract a 50% import duty to cushion domestic growers.
  • India relies on roughly 4.5–5 lakh tonnes of annual apple imports to offset production shortfalls, with Turkiye among the top suppliers.
  • Washington has pressed for lower apple tariffs in early talks for a bilateral trade agreement with New Delhi.
  • New Delhi says it will safeguard farmer incomes and consumer affordability as it pursues free trade agreements.
