India, Thailand Move to Repatriate Nearly 500 Indians Detained After KK Park Raid

Verification of identities in Thailand is required because many arrivals lack passports.

Overview

  • India’s Ministry of External Affairs said its mission in Thailand is working with authorities to confirm nationality and arrange returns once Thai legal formalities conclude.
  • Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul said India plans to send a plane to Mae Sot and the Indian ambassador will meet the immigration chief to accelerate checks for roughly 500 people.
  • Local officials report that more than 1,500 people from about 28 countries fled into Mae Sot after Myanmar’s military operations targeted the KK Park compound.
  • KK Park is described as a major transnational cybercrime hub run by Chinese criminal syndicates and protected by militia groups linked to Myanmar’s military.
  • Those who crossed include trafficking victims and some suspected operators of scam centres, and India notes it previously flew home 549 nationals from similar facilities in March.
