India Targets FY 2026–27 Commissioning for Kulasekarapattinam Spaceport

Direct SSPO trajectories from the coastal site lift SSLV capacity, opening a path for private small-satellite launches.

Overview

  • In a written reply to the Lok Sabha on 20 August, the Department of Space said land acquisition is complete except plots needed to reroute the East Coast Road, with site development finished and construction of technical facilities underway in Thoothukudi, Tamil Nadu.
  • The government has set a commissioning target for the financial year 2026–27 for India’s second spaceport.
  • ₹985.96 crore has been allocated to the project, with ₹389.58 crore utilised as of 31 July 2025.
  • Fabrication of equipment and structures is in progress at multiple work centres, according to the ministry update.
  • The site’s south-bound trajectory provides direct access to Sun‑Synchronous Polar Orbits, enabling roughly 300 kg SSLV payloads compared with payload‑penalised SSPO launches from SDSC‑SHAR, and post‑commissioning operations plan to include SSLV‑class missions by Non‑Government Entities.
