India Strengthens DGCA Tariff Watch to Curb Airfare Spikes

The move targets opportunistic fare hikes tied to a deregulated market with recent capacity constraints.

Overview

  • Civil Aviation Minister Kinjarapu Rammohan Naidu told the Rajya Sabha the DGCA’s tariff monitoring unit is being reinforced to prevent opportunistic pricing.
  • The monitoring will expand to more domestic routes as well as international sectors.
  • Naidu cited a demand–supply mismatch in a deregulated market as the primary driver of fare surges.
  • He said the government capped prices on December 6 after IndiGo’s operational curtailment triggered disruptions and upward pressure on fares.
  • The ministry reported AirSewa resolved nearly all complaints in 2022–2024 and has 282 of 16,591 cases pending in 2025, with a new “Air Fare” category added.
