India Starts Caller-Name Display Pilots as TRAI Backs Default CNAP Rollout

Nationwide availability is targeted for March 31, 2026 following an initial focus on 4G and 5G.

Overview

  • Vodafone Idea has begun trials in Haryana and Jio is launching tests there for calls placed across the country, according to DoT sources.
  • TRAI aligned with the telecom department to have Calling Name Presentation enabled by default, with users allowed to opt out.
  • The service will show KYC-verified names from operator records and will be offered as a supplementary feature rather than a core network requirement.
  • Telcos must build secure CNAM databases, and new devices sold in India are advised to be CNAP-compatible within six months of government notification.
  • Rollout will extend to legacy 2G/3G after technical feasibility is achieved, with CLIR users excluded and analysts cautioning the system may not fully stop spam or fraud.
